Joe Orlow status: Building a Jewish Community

How can a sustainable Jewish community be built from the ground up in Montgomery County, Maryland? A book published by the Maryland Organic Backyard Initiative addresses that question. A PDF draft version of the document, titled "Reckonbook" is attached to this post. Please take a look at it and share any feedback you have with me. Joe Orlow commented on blog post: Where the Fruit Comes From

I picked up an organic blueberry bush at Whole Foods in Rockville a few weeks ago. I noshed and shared the blueberries as they ripened. I finally got around to taking it out the pot it came in and planting it this week.

Joe Orlow commented on blog post: Question of the Week #19

I think one challenge is making Environmental cost effective. Money talks. If the true cost of pollution becomes more apparent and the true economy of conserving and using "green" is recognized, then being environmental will become "mainstream". In general, to get people to act on a community wide basis takes two elements: the carrot and the stick. Money can be the carrot. Another challenge is to wield the stick without becoming the "Green Police", as famously portrayed in that commercial for...more...

Joe Orlow commented on blog post: Trees without Bulldozers: Environmental Justice for the Bedouin

Homes being dismantled is nothing new! About 10,000 Jews had their homes bulldozed a couple of years back. Show me some videos of olive trees being bulldozed. That would be something to see. And I suppose you're right about bulldozing homes being an environmental issue: when the Arabs used the former land of Gush Katif to launch rockets at Jews, those rockets spew all kinds of chemicals which are inimical to life (not to mention what happens when a rocket fragment actually hits somebody.)

At this point I can't comment on whether the allegations that Jews are bulldozing olive trees while shooting people with rubber bullets are valid. I can note, however, that the article seems to make these allegations without giving sources, such as videos to back them up. I have come across videos where people in the Land of Israel have been shot and injured with teargas canisters, so I might expect to find videos to back up bulldozing allegations. I followed the link to foreignpolicy.com and...more...

Hello. I'm putting a comment here so I'll have a link on my jewcology.com profile page. Can this be used for organic farming? Is the stream water usable for gardening?

Joe Orlow commented on blog post: Question of the Week #14

To heal and protect...I think I'm stumped on this one! I'm going to re-formulate the question in multiple choice format, which will allow me to guess an answer. 1. I'm eating organically grown food. 2. I'm using solar energy. 3. I'm conserving energy by hardly running the heat. 4. I'm surfing the Jewcology.com website. 5. All of the above. 6. None of the above. I'm going to say "1", eating organic.

Joe Orlow commented on blog post: Intertwine the Environment and Social Justice? Be Careful.

Evonne, you packed a lot into one essay. There's enough in there to expand into a book! That being said, I read your essay twice, and I think it bears re-reading a few more times. For the time being, I'm going to comment on Suggestion (1). In Suggestion (1) you write: "Given the crisis we face, if we are not getting significant long-term environmental benefits out of an individual project, why are we spending our precious and limited time on it?" I would like to point out that the environment...more...
